Remember when eating watermelon could turn into a competition?

A big slice of cold watermelon on a hot summer day was already a treat—but sooner or later, somebody would start spitting the seeds. Then came the challenge: Who could spit one the farthest?

We didn't need trophies or prizes. Just watermelon, a patch of yard, and enough kids willing to argue about exactly where each seed landed.
